I absolutely love a good tall chai tea latte with coconut milk and sprinkle of cinnamon from Starbucks! However, the drink can wreak havoc on your clean eating efforts and add unnecessary carbs and sugar to your diet. I love them so much that I actually had to detox from them over the summer. I still treat myself once or twice a week, and I’ve figured out how to satisfy my desire for something warm and frothy on cold blustery mornings.
The Starbucks version of my all-time favorite carries 190 calories, 3.5g of fat, 34g of carbohydrates, and 32g of sugar. In the land of clean eating, these are not the most favorable numbers for one 12oz. drink of ANYTHING. Desperate for a better way, I started experimenting with some ways to clean it up and came up with a pretty close contender. To make this at home you’ll need the following:
1- Tazo Chai Tea tea bag
8 oz. of piping hot water
1/4 tsp. cinnamon
1 tbsp. honey
3 tbsp coconut milk (canned & unsweetened)
Steep 1 bag of Tazo chai tea in piping hot water for about 5 minutes. Next, add in 1 tbsp. honey, 1/4 tsp. cinnamon, and 3 tbsp. coconut milk. Place the mixture in a blender or nutri-bullet for about 10-15 seconds or until forms frothy bubbles. Pour it into your favorite mug and ENJOY!
My version of my most “favoritest” drink carries 124 calories, 3.5g of fat (good fat), 19g of carbohydrates, and 18g of sugar and will yield slightly under 10oz. Coconut milk is great non-dairy substitute for a ton of recipes and you really get a good dose of healthy fat from it. Leftover coconut milk can be kept in the refrigerator for up to 3-4 days and/or frozen in ice cube trays to use in smoothies or unthawed for other recipes. This recipe is super simple to make and worth the saved grams of carbs and sugar. Just another little clean eating hack that will help you stay on track. Let me know what you think!
